Gimnastic de Tarragona 2 – 1 RCD Mallorca: Disappointing Defeat Ends Automatic Promotion Hopes 🇬🇧

RCD Mallorca fell to a disappointing defeat on Saturday afternoon against already relegated Gimnastic to end the hopes of automatic promotion. RCD Mallorca put in a dismal performance but almost managed to salvage something from the game with a 90th minute goal from Abdon Prats. However, they couldn’t hold out and moments later conceded the winning goal with only seconds left until the final whistle.

Prior to the game RCD Mallorca were in a buoyant mood following a run of 6 games unbeaten and back to back wins against promotion rivals Sporting de Gijon and Malaga. However, this game was a banana skin which RCD Mallorca well and truly fell for. Missing key players Dani Rodriguez and Antonio Raillo through suspension, playing away to an already relegated side is not as easy as it seems. Vicente’s Moreno and his former Gimnastic men found it a particularly unhappy return to Tarragona.

Cordoba CF 3 – 2 RCD Mallorca Too Little Too Late as RCD Mallorca Return with Nothing 🇬🇧

RCD Mallorca put in a frustrating performance and returned from the mainland with nothing this weekend, falling to a 3-2 defeat away at bottom side Cordoba CF. Despite serving up a grand stand finish that offered hope, it was ultimately too little too late.

Two weeks previously, RCD Mallorca fans visited Las Palmas hoping for anything but expecting nothing. That day they took all 3 points against all expectations. Yesterday, the results were reversed and all optimism and momentum behind the RCD Mallorca promotion push seems to have been lost, for now at least.

RCD Mallorca 3 – 0 Real Zaragoza: RCD Mallorca take a liking to Monday Football 🇬🇧

«No Queremos Football los Lunes» (We don’t want Monday football), rang out around Son Moix throughout RCD Mallorca’s game against Real Zaragoza last night. In truth, the Vermillion took quite a liking to Monday football, romping away emphatically to win the game 3-0 following the sending off of Real Zaragoza left back Carlos Nieto on 73 minutes.

Up until that stage the game had been a nervy affair, at least in the stands, with RCD Mallorca chasing all three points to capitalise on Cadiz’s slip up at home to lowly Cordoba on Sunday. Capitalise they did, eventually in style, and once Nieto had been given his marching orders the game was over and RCD Mallorca turned on the style.

UD Las Palmas 1 – 2 RCD Mallorca; Mallorca Fly High in the Canaries 🇬🇧

RCD Mallorca turned the form book on it’s head with the most unlikely away result of the season in the most difficult of locations. Unbeaten at home in the league this season until today, UD Las Palmas’ play off push under new boss Pepe Mel was halted abruptly as RCD Mallorca fly high in the Canaries. The victory for RCD Mallorca was not only season defining, it also all but kills the play off dreams of one of their challengers.

The result sees RCD Mallorca return to the top six promotion places, ahead of Cadiz on their head to head results, having taken 4 points from the South Coast side. Such small issues could prove to be decisive come the end of the season. What is certain is that now the club must stop speaking of 50 points for survival and start to aim for the sky to see who they can chase down.
