A trip to UD Las Palmas this weekend for Mallorca who seek another perfect weekend and an elusive away victory. Last weekend’s 1-0 victory over Real Oviedo at Son Moix was the opening game of the Segunda weekend. What followed will have left Mallorca fans open mouthed and blew the race for the top six wide open. Like a domino rally, each team in the hunt for the play offs lost, with only Osasuna and Granada, the top two sides, winning.

Mallorca managed to keep their destiny in their own hands on Saturday by sneaking victory in an often tight game at stadium Son Moix. They came up against a stubborn Real Oviedo side who came with little intention other than to defend and leave with a point, a game plan that was scuppered by another strike from left back Pervis Estupiñan.
The Ecuadorian, on loan from Premier League Watford, has discovered an ability of scoring crucial goals since his inclusion in the team following injury to Salva Ruiz four months ago. Saturday’s winning goal was his third goal in ten games, a remarkable return for a left back, with those goals contributing 7 points to the team’s tally alone.

Following last week’s ‘so near yet so far’ performance against Elche CF, Mallorca face play off rivals Real Oviedo in a make or break promotion six pointer. If the Vermillion are to stand any chance of making sixth spot then the path to glory starts on Saturday at Son Moix, in what has become a must win game.
Real Oviedo currently sit two points ahead of Mallorca in the race for the play offs and a win would peg back their opponents and Mallorca leap frog them at a crucial stage of the season. Equally, a defeat for the home side at this stage would all but end their ambitions of playing in La Liga in 2019-20.

Mallorca’s play off charge took a huge blow this afternoon, being held at home by the cynical Elche CF in an eventful game which the referee struggled to wrestle control of throughout. Following a favourable set of Saturday results for our promotion rivals, with Malaga picking up a point away from home and Cadiz beating Albacete, Mallorca found themselves 5 points off the play offs at kick off. Now, more than ever, they needed their home form to hold firm. Continuar leyendo «Cynical Elche CF Wrestle away Play off Dreams 🇬🇧»
Mallorca return to home sweet home at Son Moix this Sunday, with what is a must win game in the race for the top six against mid table Elche CF. The away form of the Vermillions continues to heap pressure upon their performances at Son Moix, particularly in games such as this where the league standings suggest that nothing other than a Mallorca victory is possible.

Mallorca played out a 2-2 draw against CD Tenerife last night in a game that has sparked much discussion over whether the result is a point gained towards the play offs or two thrown carelessly away. Having had a two goal lead with little over twenty minutes remaining, Mallorca were pegged back in dramatic scenes, leaving once more a sense of disappointment on their travels.
On the face of it all, a two goal lead away from home looks to be an improvement in fortunes for Mallorca, so often beaten on their travels this season. However, the manner of the result will have left supporters under no illusions that whilst a rare double was put on the score sheet away from Son Moix, and another precious point gained, the performance really showed little demonstrable progress. The side were second best throughout and, were it not for the frequent heroics of Manolo Reina in goal, the scoreline would have been a much uglier one.

With only three months of the season remaining, Mallorca’s away record of only 11 points in 13 games, scoring only 9 times, is a mystery to most who watch at Son Moix. The fact that the side has managed to stay in contention for a play off place with such weak form away from the island is an achievement in itself. So where exactly has it been going wrong for Mallorca on their travels this year and what can they change in their final games to make the difference?
